The Academic Advising Process
Listen! Ask Questions! Participate!
Rapport Building
Your academic advisor's goal is to identify your needs, by asking about a particular issue or issues you would like to address during an advising session.
Information Gathering
Your advisor will ask questions and listen to you as you describe information about your educational background, your goals and interests. Your advisor will listen to you discuss pertinent information needed to identify solutions and assist you in making good academic and career choices.
Information Giving Based on the information you provide, your academic advisor will help generate options for programs of study, class selections, career options, study skills, etc. Your advisor is able to explain college policies and procedures that affect your academic career at UCF.
Decision Making Decision making is often the hardest part of the advising session. It is a never ending process that you must engage in throughout your life. Your advisor's role in the decision making process is to provide you with the most current information to assist you in making the most informed decisions possible. It is important that as a student you sort through the various options presented to you during your advising sessions.
Before You See an Academic Advisor
Proper preparation will enhance the quality of your meeting with your advisor:

- Read the course descriptions in the back of the catalog to learn about the courses you need to take. Check for prerequisites!
- Review your degree audit.
- Prepare a list of questions you wish to ask.
Students are responsible for knowing their program of study requirements.
Your Responsibilities:
- Provide your academic advisor with accurate semester progress information before the withdrawal deadline.
- Provide your academic advisor with updated contact information (email, address, phone).
- Fulfill all semester advising requirements given by your academic advisor.
