Mastering College Level Coursework Seminars
"The Critical First Two Weeks"

Mastering College Level Coursework Seminars are proactive pre-enrollment seminars for first-time-in-college students. These seminars focus on the academic and life skills needed during the first two weeks of college to achieve success both inside and outside the classroom.

Objectives of the Seminar

• Focus on preparing freshmen for the first two weeks of college
• Provide freshmen with academic resources and life skills needed to start their college experience with confidence
• Empower freshmen with the understanding that it is time for them to take responsibility for their education

2008 Seminar Materials

Participants will receive a FREE AcademiKit Study Organizer
This study organizer will provide:

• An academic time manager to record appointments and assignments
• Specifically designed notebook paper, following the Cornell Method, to take notes
  effectively and to prepare class notes for review
• A text guider to record textbook infomation for review
• A textbook manager bookmark to track reading assignments
• Test prep cards and organizer to write key terms and definitions for review
• Course organizer dividers to organize course notes and papers
• How to Study in College Booklet

Greetings & Welcome to UCF! I am excited to know that you are considering to or are actually planning on attending one of SARC’s Mastering College Level Coursework Seminars. I have participated in these seminars in the past as a way to talk to incoming students regarding my academic and personal experiences here at UCF. I have many great things to tell you about UCF and more importantly proven advice that will lead to your success in the classroom I along with other UCF undergraduate students will be giving you insights from where to park, how to join a student club, to living with roommates, to how to organize your planner, to how to study for a test. I look forward to telling you about my successes and failures so that you will have an advantage in being able to make the most of your time at UCF

Evaluation Results from Fall 2007 Seminars:

• 98% of the students in attendance felt that they were more aware and had a better understanding of the resources available to them to succeed academically and personally
• 94% felt they were more aware of what is expected of them as a UCF student.
• 97% felt that they now know of college level learning skills that will allow them to be a better student at UCF.
• 96% felt they were better prepared for the first week of class than they did prior to coming to the seminar.

Mastering College Level Coursework Seminars vs. SLS 1501 (click here for the SLS 1501 website)

• These seminars are a great supplement to the SLS 1501 course. The information presented at these seminars is not repetitive information that a student would receive in SLS 1501.
• If a student is not able to take SLS 1501 due to degree requirements or scheduling conflicts, then these seminars would be a great substitution for SLS 1501.
• The purpose of these workshops is to break down much of the information presented at orientation and give the basic materials and resources needed to start one's first two weeks at UCF with great confidence.

• It is a great way to meet other UCF students prior to the start of the semester.
• A great way to reconnect with UCF staff concerning academic strategies discussed at Orientation

SARC Academic Support Services available during the 2008 Fall Semester:

• Free Peer Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction Sessions
• over 20 subject areas during the 2008 fall semester including, General Chemistry, Statistics, Astronomy and Biology
• FREE Academic Success Workshops
• over 12 workshops on time management, goal setting, power studying, stress management, and final test prep.
• Access to 10 Computers for use of the internet, writing papers, checking email, completing web assignments
• One-on-one study skills consultations with a Learning Skills Specialist available through the summer, fall and spring semester
• Open extended hours during finals week of the spring semester with final review sessions conducted by peer tutors and SI leaders
