College Achievement Program

FAQ's | Preparing for CAP | Preparatory Courses Offered | CAP Resources

The College Achievement Program (CAP) is designed for students with SAT or ACT scores below the state of Florida minimum that requires students to enroll in college preparatory courses. Currently the state minimums are SAT: Math 440, Verbal 440, and ACT: English 17, Reading 18, Math 19. If your SAT/ACT scores indicate that you are a CAP student, you would be required to take specific preparatory courses in English, Reading, or Math.

Preparatory courses are offered on the UCF main campus, but taught by Valencia Community College (VCC) instructors. As a result, CAP students must complete a VCC registration packet consisting of a VCC application, UCF transient student form, and a $35 application fee.

CAP students at UCF are advised through the Student Academic Resource Center (SARC) for their first year at UCF, or three semesters.

All CAP students must fulfill two requirements per semester:

1. You must see your academic advisor (Nikki Nizynski) prior to the Withdrawal Deadline of October 16, 2009.

It is a mandatory requirement for each student assigned to the College Achievement Program to complete a face-to-face academic advising appointment prior to the fall 2009 Withdrawal deadline of October 16, 2009.

To schedule an appointment with the CAP Academic Advisor, Nikki Nizynski, please call SARC at 407-823-5130 and the student assistant answering the phone will have access to Nikki’s calendar and can determine a date and time for your appointment.

Nikki is available 2-3 days per week between the hours of 8am and 5pm. If you are finding it difficult tp schedule an academic advising appointment, please contact Nikki at nizynski@mail.ucf.edu.

This appointment will be scheduled for 30 minutes. Follow-up academic advising appointments are encouraged and appreciated. Please arrive to SARC 5 minutes early to check-in with the student assistant in HPH room 115 (SARC Lab).

During this important academic advising appointment, the following information will be reviewed:

  • Academic progress in each of your classes. Be prepared to discuss honestly current grade standing in each of your courses.
  • Questions or concerns regarding Valencia Community College policies, procedures, or preparatory courses will be discussed.
  • Review academic policies for complete understanding of grade forgiveness and withdrawing from a course.
  • Review one’s degree audit for complete understanding of the process toward completion of the General Education Program, major/degree requirements, and CLAS.
  • Schedule plan for the spring 2010 semester. Review how to register for spring 2010 classes and have complete understanding regarding “enrollment appointments”.
  • Discuss current major/minor selection. How to change a major will be discussed, if necessary.
  • Latest and greatest information regarding opportunities to become involved in campus events and student organizations will be available.
  • …and of course discussion of any questions or concerns of yours.

2. It is a mandatory requirement of each student assigned to the College Achievement Program to complete an (one) Outreach Programming Event prior to November 23, 2009.

The purpose of this requirement is to:

  • Involve you in the UCF Community
  • Help you network with important individuals, offices, and services throughout the campus
  • Expose you to programs which can assist you in reaching your academic and personal goals

***If you are currently enrolled in SLS 1501 Strategies for Success for the fall 2009 semester, you are not required to complete an outreach program.***

Click here for a list of what you can attend to meet your outreach requirement.

Failure to complete both of these mandatory academic advising requirements will result in your myUCF account being placed on hold. This academic advising hold will prohibit you from registering for the spring 2010 semester.
